However, it has only been a hype term to describe a more immersive digital environment that did not need an arbitrary term to characterize it.
Now, the technology industry is shifting focus toward the underlying technologies associated with the term, with little to no mention of it. Digital Twins are one of these technologies used to increase immersion with our digital instruments. The so-called ‘hype’ around digital twins has been nonexistent for several reasons. Firstly, the underlying technology has been built and is improving. Secondly, the companies building twins understand their current limitations and potential due to deployment across various use cases.
These two causes have made the industry realistic about the expectations of digital twins, meaning talented engineers, leaders, and industry workers can focus on building the technology rather than getting mixed up in all the hype. The difference between this and hype terms such as Metaverse and AI is significant. These industries are caught up in the hype train of definitions and what the technology could be rather than what they are now. For example, when we look at chatGPT, we see an impressive technology that needs more precision and accuracy and tends to limit users’ productivity because it often tells lies. Thus, providers must double down on building reliable use cases that facilitate creativity rather than limit productivity and accuracy.
The digital twin space is on the flip side of this coin, developing reliable use cases that enhance workers’ productivity and do not retract from creativity. Therefore, we must avoid the hype associated with the technologies above and focus on building use cases that aid in human creativity rather than detract from it.
