Nasa has announced the development of a digital twin to track wildfires. The digital twin will aim to monitor and predict potential fires and track air pollution.
The Wildfire Digital Twin will be funded by NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office and FireSense Program. Over 20 researchers from the University of Maryland will lead the project with the software using airborne, situ and spaceborne sensors to gather data.
First responders will be able to use the twin, acting as an effective tool in monitoring a wildfire from afar without the need for the internet, enabling firefighters to plan how to tackle wildfires before they engage. The digital twin will also help monitor trends in wildfires and their impact on climate change with C02 emissions.
Although this project is a new undertaking for Nasa, digital twins operating in the organizations processes is not new. Nasa is using digital twins to develop models of the Earth as well as using immersive technology such as virtual reality in training.
