The Launch of the European Commission’s Initiative Destination Earth

-

The European Commission has begun building its digital twin, Destination Earth. The digital twin will create a virtual replica of the Earth. Utilizing leading EU supercomputers such as EuroHPC and LUMI in Finland, the digital twin will monitor weather patterns and the impact of climate change.

As with all digital twins, they require an instant feedback loop to a physical counterpart. Destination Earth is no different, gathering data from other EU programs such as Copernicus and institutions like Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Over 315 million dollars in funding have been designated for the program, and the digital twin will be developed by 2030. Destination Earth was launched by leading figures, Finnish Minister for Employment Arto Satonen and EU Vice-President Margrethe Vestager.
